Education Sector

Supporting lifelong learning in a safe environment

Tamar Safety know the education sector, not just by working with educational establishments - but by working in them, with a combined experience of over 100 years! In fact, we can't escape it as our founder, Dave, is a qualified School Business Manager, previous FE College, H&S Manager, approver of off-site activities and currently Chair of Governors to 2 primary schools!

Education, like other public services, continues to have to adapt to considerable change whilst meeting existing challenges. All educational establishments have a primary duty to safeguard staff and young people in their care, whilst creating 'risk aware, but not risk averse' citizens of tomorrow. Effective health and safety management requires a whole community approach, from individual schools to an entire Trust; from staff to students; and from the classrooms, playgrounds and beyond.

Our retained support packages explained

Each retained support membership package comes with a collection of benefits across each level - so you can be assured to receive excellent support as standard. These include:

In discussion with a member of our team, your individual package will be created based on 2 components: the number of annual site visit audits required per year at your reduced rate, plus your chosen benefits level from our Bronze, Silver and Gold options. For multi-site organisations, such as MATs, we advise an additional desktop review of central services and how these are embedded across each site. Why might educational establishments need fire safety and H&S support?

Although not common, unfortunately, incidents do occur that involve students, staff and members of the public linked to education activities. These incidents can range from slips and trips on poorly maintained floor surfaces and minor injuries in DT workshops; to serious incidents on field trips and even fatalities involving working at height or tree collapse. In all cases, it is clear that a strong culture and management of health and safety is a critical element in the effective organisation and running of all educational establishments.

The HSE understand that in many cases, establishments can manage health and safety themselves or with the help of in-house advisors. However, there are times when establishments will need to get external help, particularly on more detailed or technical issues, when impartial advice is required, or to assist in accreditation and procurement schemes through an audit. This is often referred to by the HSE as specialist help. The HSE guidance document INDG420 Getting specialist help with health and safety offers an excellent introduction.
